Hashimoto's Disease / Hypothyroidism

This summer I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease which is an autoimmune disease which affects the thyroid causing Hypothyroidism.
So this past week I was put on medication, Synthroid, which is a synthetic thyroid hormone replacement. We'll see how it goes and where the right balance is. One problem is it must be taken in the morning with a large glass of water 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else. Additionally, you can not have iron or calcium containing foods/vitamins, etc for 4 hours after taking the medication.
Breakfasts were common for me having CARBOS, fat-free yogurt, whole-grain muffins (made with milk and non-fat yougurt), Whey Protein Shakes (contains milk products and calcium).
Looking for anyone's experiences with similar and suggestions for breakfasts.
Today needed a quick breakfast, had Ezekial 4:9 sprouted bread (one of the few legal breads) as Almost Level One with some Sugar-Free Strawberry Preserves.
Look forward to hearing from everyone.
David
I was also recently diagnosed Hashi's and hypo. Neither the doc nor the pharm said anything about avoiding iron and calcium 4 hours after dosing! Ooops. They just upped my dosage to 50 mcg from 25. I'm taking levothyroxin which is generic for synthroid. Almost 2 months now and Ive been having a battle just to stay stable on my weight. I'm a bit stumped on having any breakfast without iron or calcium... I mean honestly, eggs etc have lots of iron, right? Thanks for the heads up on this restriction, as I will have to do some research on this.
Just started the Synthroid last week at 25mcg.
The information on the meds has the restrictions and says to take it with a large glass of water 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything.
Saraoconnor, are you maintaining with Level Two or working on losing with Level One?
Yup, they told me about the water and the 30 mins, but not the iron and calcium. That's a tough one!
I'm still L1 trying to lose another 20 pounds. Much harder now since the thyroid went wacko. At this point I have to fight to stay stable. When I first started the meds, I gained 5 pounds in just a few days! I've gotten those off, but now I'm L1 and just maintaining. I'm hoping that once they get my dosage right, I'll get off this plateau.
Sara have you read Slim & Sexy Forever? Suzanne modified the Level 2 rules in it. She also talked about using a Modified Level 2 if your hormones are out of balance. It might give you some insight for getting things working again for the weight loss.
Got the news on Wednesday this week, that my TSH levels have not improved enough, so my Synthroid is not increased to 75mcg. We'll see if I meet the acceptable TSH levels. I definitely hope that this will help me feel better. I have to be happy that Somersizing has allowed me to keep losing weight through this.
Anyone dealing with this, I've got a question: When your meds are adjusted, do get leg cramps? I've ended up having MAJOR cramp in my right calf and seems to happen each time my Synthroid has been adjusted.
You want to take that seriously, David. I'd suggest asking your doctor about it. Cramps in the legs can mean a circulation problem, and if the medicine is causing that, the doc may want to adjust it or change it or whatever.
I don't recall getting frequent leg cramps, but since being on the meds I've had a lot more leg tiredness/aches. There was awhile when going up the stairs was too much for the old legs. They have lessened as my dose has gone up. The only really weird thing I can recall is in yoga, one of my legs started to cramp up in a very easy pose, which is not the norm for me.
